A Letter From The White House

A Letter From The White House

Last December, I wrote a letter to the President of the United States and I mailed it.

Last week, I received a letter in the mail from President Biden.

My dad was so excited for me.

“You have a letter from the White House!”

It was in a fancy envelope.

I opened it.

Almost a year later from when I mailed it.

What would he say?

I opened up the envelope.

The letter was typed on thick stationary paper.

Not on common computer paper.

On cream paper, not on blanched white.

The letter read “Dear Khristee,”

He spelled my name correctly.

He wrote four paragraphs and signed his name in a black marker.

But it was a form letter.

It didn’t address any of the issues I addressed in my letter.

I wrote him because the US has the highest mortality and morbidity rate in childbirth of any developed country in the world.

The racial disparity is known.

African American women die in childbirth disproportionately higher more than whites.

In Georgia, it is even higher than the national average.

And there is racial disparity among Native American women in childbirth too.

Morality rates have risen dramatically since the pandemic.

What is being done?

More and more articles are appearing in The NY Times about childbirth in the US. They mention childbirth deserts, places where poor blacks live and do not have access to medical care or hospitals. Women have to drive two hours for care or to give birth. Articles mention how we fair lower than other developed countries in Europe and Asia. They mention that the mortality numbers are not plateauing, but rising.

I mentioned to him about illnesses that happen to African Americans and Native Americans more than others in pregnancy and postpartum and how they are not being treated properly which are causing serious complications at birth and beyond.

I mentioned to him that I am writing a three book series on childbirth around the world.

I mentioned how I had interviewed over 70 mothers and childbirth experts around the world.

I mentioned that I had done extensive research
and that I have solutions to create change in our country.

I passionately wrote as much as I could in one page.

And his letter didn’t even mention the word childbirth in it.

A standard form letter.

I know my book series will make a huge impact in the world.

Doors have not been opening yet

but

I will keep trying to find the right avenues to help women.

I will keep writing.

I have gained so much knowledge through researching and talking to moms and experts around the world.

The time will come when people will see how important this research is not just for women today, but for the future.
